2097년, 정부가 도시 외곽의 황무지에 신도시 건설 계획을 위해 토목 공사를 진행하던 중, 예기치 못하게 지금껏 학계에 알려지지 않은 한 도시의 유적을 발견하게 되었다. 정부는 6명의 각 분야 학자들로 전문팀(유광식/고고학자, 이샘/시각인지학자, 전보경/사회인류학자, 정상섭/민속생활연구원, 진나래/종교 및 미신연구가, 요리스 린드하우트/아카이브 과학자)을 구성하여 이 유적에 대한 조사를 위임하였다. 이들 6명의 과학자는 모두 도시를 탐구하고 조사하는 최신의 방식을 따르는 학자들로, 이번 발굴 조사가 지난 인류의 도시 형성과 파괴를 이해하는 데 귀중한 자료가 될 것이라 예상하였다. 

발굴 과정 중 노트, 그림, 사진, 지도, 신문 조각 등 작은 물체들로 가득한 한 개의 여행 가방이 발견되었고, 이 여행 가방은 그 자체가 한 여성 번역가의 일생인 것으로 판명되었다. 가방 안의 내용물들은 과거 도시의 사회, 문화 정치, 경제, 종교 등 다양한 삶의 방식은 물론 이 도시가 폐허가 된 이유를 밝히는 데 중요한 밑거름이 될 것들이었다. 분석의 결과 이 여성은 당시의 도시 사회가 극도록 디자인되어서 모든 사람이 일정한 행동 패턴을 가지도록 유도하는, 지루하기 짝이 없는 곳이라 주장하였던 것으로 여겨진다. 아울러 그녀는 정통적이지 않은 방식으로 도시를 탐구하는 데 일생을 바친 사람임이 드러났다. 또한, 이 가방 외에 도시의 생활상을 보여주는 유물이 전혀 없다는 점을 보아 그녀는 다른 사람들과 도시를 떠난 것이 아니라, 불분명한 상황에서 실종된 것으로 보인다. 

우리는 이 여성의 가방에서 나온 자료들을 선별하고 조사하는 과정을 통해 이 도시의 시간적 흐름을 유추하였으며, 이에 본 도시의 생성과 갈등, 소멸의 과정을 정리하여 책으로 발간하기로 했다.

In 2097, the government found the remains of a city that was never known to the academic world. During construction of New City some workers who were digging the foundations for a building stumbled upon these ruins on a large wasteland just outside of the city. The government sent a group of 6 specialists composed of: Gwangsig Yoo (archeologist), Saem Lee (visual cognition researcher), Bokyung Jun (social anthropologist), Sangsup Jung (folklorist), Narae Jin (theologist with a specialization in myth) and Joris Lindhout (archival scientist). They were send to excavate and investigate the remains of the city because they’re trained in applying the newest ways of researching and investigating cityscapes. The team expects this excavation to be of tremendous value to understand the rise and fall of cities from this era. 

While digging the team found a suitcase containing notes, photographs, maps and newspaper clippings amongst other things. After a first analyses of the material it seemed the suitcase and it’s contents had belonged to a female translator who dedicated her life to urban activism. There was no doubt that this material would form an important foundation to understand the cities society, culture, politics, economy and religion, and that it could even hold the key to understanding the reasons behind its destruction. Further analysis proved that the translator based her work upon the idea that the urban society was designed to make people behave in similar patterns. Life in this city was most likely designed to an extreme detailed level. The translator devoted her life to studying the design of this city in different ways. Apart from her suitcase there were no other relics found among the ruins, which makes it seem like she might have been the last inhabitant. Her death yet remains shrouded in clouds. 

From the analysis of the contents of the translator’s suitcase we were able to make a reconstruction of the timeline of this city. This book contains that reconstruction, showing the creation, struggle and fall of the city illustrated by the original images and notes collected by the translator.
